Background

The situation

A regional healthcare organization running multi-site operations was outgrowing its on-premises infrastructure just as patient populations expanded. Compute limits produced clinical system slowdowns during peak volumes, and legacy hardware carried a heavy total cost of ownership through recurring upgrades, licensing renewals, and manual maintenance. Data-access latency delayed EHR and diagnostic workflows, while managing sensitive patient data in aging systems made compliance increasingly complex. Rigid infrastructure also blocked adoption of emerging capabilities such as AI-driven diagnostics.

The objective

Modernize the core infrastructure without disrupting clinical operations, giving the organization elastic capacity for patient-volume spikes, faster access to clinical data, and a stronger security and compliance posture. The migration had to reduce long-term operating cost and open a path to future innovation.

Modernize the database tier on Amazon RDS

Migrated core clinical databases to Amazon RDS with automated backups and Multi-AZ deployment, removing manual maintenance overhead and delivering high availability for patient-critical systems.

Centralize and secure access through Amazon API Gateway

Introduced Amazon API Gateway as a managed, scalable entry point for internal applications and third-party integrations, standardizing secure access to clinical services.

Consolidate data storage on Amazon S3

Moved structured and unstructured data to Amazon S3 with lifecycle policies that tier and retire data automatically, controlling storage cost while keeping records available.

Accelerate delivery with Amazon CloudFront

Deployed Amazon CloudFront as a content delivery network to cut data-access latency and improve responsiveness of clinical and administrative applications across sites.

Unify identity with Amazon Cognito

Implemented Amazon Cognito for secure single sign-on across applications, simplifying clinician access while tightening authentication controls over sensitive data.

Migrate in phases to protect clinical continuity

Sequenced the cutover workload by workload, validating each tier before advancing so care delivery continued uninterrupted throughout the transition.
